The SIAI Marchetti S.205 - is a four-seat single-engine plane from the Italian manufacturer SIAI - Marchetti.

History and construction

The S.205 was created in 1964 on the basis of an idea of the SIAI - Marchetti chief designer Alexander Brena. The aircraft was an all-metal low-wing monoplane, powered by a Lycoming 360 A1B6D piston engine with 200 hp and provided space for four people. The further development of S.208, was powered by a 260 -horsepower engine strong engine, retractable landing gear and had five seats. The first production aircraft, an p.205 - 18F flew in February 1966 and delivery began in the following year. Production was discontinued in 1975, but in 1977 resumed to produce another 140 to 1980 p.205 -20R for the Aero Club Italia.

About 65 bodies were transported to the United States in order to be finally assembled in Syracuse, NY by the Waco Aircraft Company. Initially the aircraft as WACO Sirrus ( four-seater ) and was later VELA S220 ( fünfsitzig ). After the death of Mr. Berger, the president of WACO, assembly in the U.S. was discontinued.

Service history

The Italian Air Force acquired 45 airplanes and used them as a liaison, trainer and as a glider tug. The military version was known as the S.208M. It differed from the civilian variant of the avionics, two cockpit doors and a tow hooks, and the absence of some fuel tanks. The first four aircraft were delivered p.205 and were later converted into S.208M.

Two aircraft were delivered to Tunisia and there used as training aircraft.
