Occurrence

Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is common in North America from Georgia to Manitoba, Newfoundland and Greenland. It thrives on very exposed to the wind sites on bald spots and in crevices on rocky, acidic soils.

System

The first publication of its kind carried out in 1789 by William Aiton in Hortus Kewensis, ..., 2, p 216, Table 9 under the name ( basionym ) Potentilla tridentata, ie in the genus Potentilla. The specific epithet tridentata drawing attention to the dreigezähnten leaflets. Per Axel Rydberg introduced in 1898 in A Monograph of the North American Potentilleae, p 187 this species under the name Sibbaldiopsis tridentata in a separate genus, the new genus name Sibbaldiopsis refers to the similarity to the genus Sibbaldia.

This species was placed in the genus Potentilla of many taxonomists in the 20th century, according to phylogenetic studies, they will operate as a separate genus in 2007. Sibbaldiopsis belongs to the subtribe Fragariinae the tribe Potentilleae in the subfamily Rosoideae within the family Rosaceae.

After Juraj Paule and Jiří Soják in the Journal of the National Museum (Prague ), Natural History Series, Volume 178, Issue 4, 2009, pp. 16, she heard as Sibbaldia tridentata ( Aiton ) Paule & Soják in the genus Sibbaldia. The systematics of this kind is so controversial even after 2007. See also Juraj Paule: Evolutionary patterns and processes in the genus Potentilla L. ( Rosaceae ), Dissertation 2010: Full -text online.

Use

The extremely hardy plant is used as a ground cover ornamental plant. The particularly low-growing cultivar ' Nuuk ' is often used in the Friedhofsgärtnerei.
