Sibuyan Island

Sibuyan is an island in the province of Romblon in the central part of the island archipelago of the Philippines. It is considered a green pearl in the center of the same name Sibuyan Sea, as the island is completely protected. One third of the island's land area occupies 157 square kilometers of Mount Guiting Guiting Natural Park, and large areas of the coastal plains are shown as mangrove conservation areas.

Geography

Sibuyan belongs to the archipelago of the Romblonen consisting of thirteen islands. The island has an area of 465 km ², according to other sources 499 km ². The two peaks of Guiting - Guiting, with 2058 m, and the Sibuyan, with 2050 m, dominate the topography of the island. In the western part of the island is the lower mountain Nailog.

Six kilometers to the west lies the island of Romblon, Masbate lies to the east and south of Panay.

Management

The island is divided into three municipalities Cajidiocan, Magdiwang, San Fernando. The island had on 1 August 2007 a ​​population of 56541 people. The largest barangay is Taclobo on the south coast in the municipality of San Fernando, with a population of 4097 persons ( 2000 census ).

Incidents

The Princess of the Stars ferry had ten tons of the toxic insecticide endosulfan on board when they came on June 22, 2008, Sibuyan in a typhoon and sank.
