Sibylle Elisabeth of Württemberg

Sibylle Elisabeth of Württemberg ( born April 10, 1584 Mömpelgard; † January 20, 1606 in Dresden) was a Princess of Württemberg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony.

Life

Sibylle Elisabeth was the eldest daughter of Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg (1557-1608) from his marriage with Sibyl (1564-1614), daughter of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt.

The connection with the kursächsischem house father had sought, sought allies among the Protestant princes of the German Empire, who supported him in his quest for Lehnsunabhängigkeit from the Habsburg imperial family Sibylle Elisabeth. First, a connection with Johann Georg's older brother Christian was provided, but this 1602 married a Danish princess. A simultaneous marriage project between her brother Johann Friedrich and Johann Georg's sister Sophie was not driven by the Saxon side. Sibylle Elisabeth married on September 16, 1604 in Dresden, later to become the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony ( 1585-1656 ).

As a jointure Weissensee were provided for her castle, city and department. The couple was granted its own court, which was mainly financed by the revenue from the Bishopric of Merseburg. Sibylle Elisabeth distributed free medicines to the needy and was described as " genuine mother of the nation ", but died suddenly before the age of 22 at a febrile illness and was buried in Freiberg Cathedral.
