Sibylle of Brandenburg

Sibylle of Brandenburg ( born May 31, 1467 Ansbach, † July 9, 1524 in Kaster ) was Princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Jülich and Duchess of Berg.

Life

Sibylle was a daughter of the Elector of Brandenburg Albrecht Achilles (1414-1486) from his second marriage to Anna (1436-1512), daughter of the Elector Frederick of Saxony.

She married on 25 July 1481 Cologne Duke William of Jülich and Berg ( 1455-1511 ). The wedding was celebrated very complex. Were invited along with numerous archbishops, bishops and prelates, the Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, the Elector of Brandenburg, the Margrave of Baden, more than 50 counts and countless nobles. Due to the large crowds the marriage took place in an open field in front of Cologne Severinstor by Archbishop Hermann IV of Cologne.

Wilhelm turned repeatedly expressed concerns in writing because of the bride's treasure his wife at his in-laws. After ten years, the only child of the marriage a girl was born. Therefore Jülich and Berg fell after William 's death to his son in law. Sibylle survived her husband by 13 years. At the request of her son- in Cleves resident and her daughter, she took over until her death the government of Jülich and Berg. Sibylle was described as spirited, active and clever and just as mother of the nation.

Sibylle is buried in the Altenberg Cathedral.
