Sibylle of Saxony

Sibylle of Saxony ( born 2 May 1515 in Freiberg, † July 18, 1592 in Buxtehude ) was a Saxon princess from the Albertine line of the Wettin dynasty and by marriage Duchess of Saxe- Lauenburg.

Life

Sibylle was the eldest child of the Duke Henry of Saxony (1473-1541) from his marriage to Catherine (1487-1561), daughter of Duke Magnus II of Mecklenburg.

She married on 8 February 1540 in Dresden Duke Francis I of Saxe- Lauenburg ( 1510-1581 ). This compound was for Sibylles brother Moritz in the Smalcald War of importance. The marriage proved unhappy and Franz accused Sibylle vengeful and unlöblichen actions. In later years, Sibylle and Franz were reconciled again. In 1552 Sibylle had her brother Moritz asked for financial help so that her husband could redeem some goods and villages of Lübeck again.

The Duchess 1588 played a prominent role during the affair of her son Moritz with the bourgeois women Tschammer against which they struggled a witch trial. Sibylle was buried in the cathedral of Ratzeburg.
