Sicilian Defence, Scheveningen Variation

The Scheveningen variation of the Sicilian defense is a system, an opening in chess. In the ECO code, the Scheveningen variation is classified under the key B80.

It arises after the moves (see also: Chess notation):

Characteristic is the " small center " with e6 and d6. Black builds up defensively and examined the game on the queenside over the half-open c-file and optionally with the pawn moves a6 and b5, or he is on the development of his characters in the center active ( with d6 -d5 or e6 - e5).

The sharpest sequel is named after the Estonian grandmaster Paul Keres Keres attack, which directly initiates an attack on the king with g2 - g4 6. The White are also some other equivalent continuations available: 6 Lf1 - e2, f2 - f4 6, 6 Lc1 -e3, 6 Lf1 - c4 (See Sosin variant), 6 g2 - g3 and 6. f2 -f3. The latter initiates the pattern Le3, Dd2, f3, g4 English attack.

The classic design of the whites in this variant is Lf1 - e2, 0-0, f2 - f4, K g1 -h1 with the intention Dd1 - e1- g3. This Sb8 - c6 with Lc1 -e3 a7 - a6 and could be answered with a2 -a4.
