Sidemarker lights#Side marker lights and reflectors

Side marker lights (SML) are vehicle lamps, which serve to better illustrate the outline of a vehicle in the dark. They are coupled to the low beam. Side marker lights are available for both the front and for the rear of a vehicle, the front orange and red are the rear.

Obligation are those lights on a car built after 1970 is currently only in the USA. There, they must be attached to any car, in which the front indicator lamps are too far from the widest point of the vehicle. When the tail lights are too far from the vehicle edge, there side marker lights are also required. In American cars that do not have these lights, mark the direction indicator or tail lights the outline of the vehicle, this is possible as the front direction indicators are then coupled to the low beam.

In Germany, side marker lights, also subsequently mounted, under certain conditions also permitted.

All vehicles that are longer than six meters, active side marker lights are required by law in Germany in yellow.
