Sideros ( gr Σίδερος ), also known as Strongylo ( Στρογγύλο ), is an uninhabited rock island 345 meters off the northeastern tip of Crete. It belongs to the municipality of Sitia and thus to the Prefecture of Lasithi. The island lies just north of Kyriamadi Peninsula. The material forming the northeastern tip of the Cape is also called Cape Sideros ( Ακρωτήριο Σίδερος ).

In ancient times the name of the cape was Samonion ( Σαμώνιον, lat Sam (m) onium ) or Salmonion ( Σαλμώνιον ). Under the name Salmone ( Σαλμώνη ) it is mentioned in connection with the voyage of Paul to Rome in Acts 27:

" For many days we came only slowly and with difficulty we reached the height of Knidos, because let us not approach the wind, we sailed around Crete Salmone, drove under great difficulty to Crete along and reached a place called Kaloí Liménes in whose near the city Lasaía lies. "
