Sidi Bennour

Sidi Bennour (Arabic: سيدي بنور ) is a Moroccan city in the region Doukkala- Abda. It is the capital of the homonymous province.

Etymology

How many towns or villages west of Morocco, as well as Sidi Bennour goes back to a " local saints" ( Sidi Abou Abdellah Ben Yannour Wakris Doukkali ), who lived in the 12th century and worked and whose tomb ( marabout ) is located on the outskirts.

Location

The town of Sidi Bennour located about 100 km ( driving distance ) east of Safi and 73 km south of El Jadida. Marrakech is located about 127 km to the south.

Population

The majority of the population engaged in agriculture and as small traders, taxi drivers, etc. make is Berber descent. Leading positions in business, commerce, administration, and banking, health and education are in the hands of the Arab -born population minority. Among themselves Moroccan Arabic is mostly spoken.

Economy

The wholesale market of Sidi Bennour is the largest in Morocco. History

In the Middle Ages and into the 20th century it would be - if ever - have been only a small market town. After the re-creation of the province in 2009, the city was the provincial capital.
