Sidney Lanfield

Sidney Lanfield ( born April 20, 1898 in Chicago, † June 20, 1972 in Marina del Rey, California ) was an American film director.

Life

Lanfield began his career as a jazz musician and vaudeville entertainer and went to Hollywood in 1926, where he was first taken from the Fox Film Corporation as an author under contract. In 1930 he delivered his directorial debut with El barbero de Napoleón, specializing in romantic comedies from now on. However, his most successful film was the gritty detective film The Hound of the Baskerville ( The Hound of the Baskervilles, 1939), in which Basil Rathbone appeared for the first time as Sherlock Holmes. After Lanfield for Columbia Pictures will film the musical realm you never had ( You'll Never Get Rich, 1941) with Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth rotated and thus was another success, he was permanently employed by Paramount Pictures. There he took on a number of films with comedian Bob Hope as director. In the 1950s Lanfield was one of the first directors, who turned to television and numerous until the end of his career series staged, so including The Addams Family ( 1964-1966 ).

Lanfield was married from 1927 until his death with the film actress Shirley Mason. He died in 1972 at the age of 74 years and was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
