Sie werden euch in den Bann tun, BWV 44

They will put you in doing the spell ( BWV 44) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote it in Leipzig for the Sunday after Ascension, and led them on 21 May 1724 the first time.

History and words

Bach composed the cantata in his first year in Leipzig for the Sunday after Ascension. The prescribed readings for the Sunday were 1 Peter 4:8-11 LUT, " serve one another ", and Jn 15:26 LUT to Jn 16.4 LUT from the farewell discourses of Jesus, the promise of the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete and the announcement of persecution. The unknown poet begins with a quotation from the Gospel. The cantata text of Christiana Mariana von Ziegler for Bach's work for the same event the following year, They will put you out of the synagogue, BWV 183, begins with the same quote, but otherwise both cantatas have little in common. The poet sees the persecution of Christians, summarized by Martin Moller Oh God, how much heartache as set fourth in sentence 5 of the poets mentioned as the cause of the Antichrist, which holds the persecution of Christians for a work pleasing to God. In Theorem 6 the persecuted God is promised to help. The final chorale is the last verse of Paul Fleming In all my deeds.

Bach led the cantata on 21 May 1724 for the first time. It is his last re-composing in his first cantata cycle. For the other events up to the beginning of the second annual cycle on the first Sunday after Trinity, he worked to older compositions.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is staffed with four soloists, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, four-part choir, two oboes, two violins, viola and basso continuo.

Music

Unusually in Bach, but often at Georg Philipp Telemann, is the division of the Bible quote on two sets, a duet and an immediately subsequent contrasting choral setting. The duet is an expressive lament, which is introduced by the oboe in imitation of topics that deal with the voices. When energized, the choir was compared with the Turbae in Bach's Passions .. The third movement takes up the mood of the first movement in calm 3/4-time with oboe obbligato. The words " torture, spell and severe pain " are expressed through expressive chromaticism, although the text speaks of overcoming them. The commentating on the chorale almost unadorned melody of " Lord Jesus Christ, mine life light " is sung by the tenor to an ostinato in the continuo, which is derived from the first line of the chorale. The following brief secco recitative brings a twist and leads to a comforting, dance aria. The cantata will be decided by a four -part chorale on the melody of O world, I must leave you, the set 10 of the St. Matthew Passion, " It's me, I should pay for " is similar.
