Siemens-Halske Sh 14

The Siemens - Halske Sh 14 is an air-cooled 7- cylinder radial engine from Siemens & Halske. It was developed in the 1920s for incorporation into education and training aircraft and went into production in 1928. The Sh 14 was used in aircraft such as the Bücker Bu 133 "Young Master," Focke -Wulf Fw 44 " Stieglitz " Udet U 12 "Flamingo", the Heinkel He 72 and Klemm Kl 31 and Kl 32.

Naming

After detachment of aircraft engine building from the company Siemens & Halske in 1934 newly created subsidiary of Siemens equipment and machine GmbH (SAM ) of Sh was designated 14 A as SAM 314. The SAM engine was moved from 1936 to the new Brandenburg Motor Works ( Bramo ) in Berlin- Spandau. As part of an expansion program BMW took over in 1939, the Bramo. Then, the motor in the literature as Bramo Sh 14 or BMW Bramo Sh 14 was designated.

Today's meaning

The aircraft, which were equipped with the Sh 14, are just as rare as the engine itself is therefore now resorted already to other engines in restorations of historic aircraft with similar specs, since practically no Sh- 14 engines more on the free market are available. Aircraft such as the Focke -Wulf Stieglitz with original engine are therefore today at air shows welcome.

Type

The Sh 14 works according to the 4- stroke principle. The cylinders are made of steel; Cylinder heads and pistons are made of an aluminum alloy. The two valves per cylinder are driven by a cam drum in the crankcase via pushrods and rocker arms. The hollow crankshaft is made of several parts. The crankcase is made of cast aluminum four-piece. There are two Bosch magnetos for the dual ignition and the two carburetors the Berlin firm SUM At the rear of the engine.
