Siemens Mobile

Siemens Mobile was a subsidiary of Siemens and for a long time the last remaining German mobile phone manufacturers. In 2005 the company was sold to the Taiwanese company BenQ and renamed BenQ Mobile. A year later, BenQ Mobile filed for insolvency.

History

1985 Siemens rose to the mobile phone C1 into a mobile phone shop. 1994 Siemens began selling the S1, the company's first GSM phone. Three years later (1997 ) launched the sale of the Siemens S10, the world's first mobile phones with color screen. The S10 was able to show four different colors. 1999, Siemens has been a pioneer again and brought the SL10 on the market, the first phone in the world in the "Slider " format.

In 2000, Siemens took over the mobile phone division of Robert Bosch GmbH and was able to increase its market share once again. At the same time the mobile phone business was spun off into a separate company. 2003 Siemens sold the Siemens SX1, the first own mobile phone with the Symbian operating system.

In particular, as of 2004, the market share of Siemens mobile phone business fell significantly, and the mobile phone division slipped into the red zone. This was traceable mainly to the miss important market trends and some major software errors in the products. The share of the world market plunged last from 8% to 5.5% from Siemens was at this time but still the fifth-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. In 2004 Siemens stressed how important it was to continue to have a presence in the growing market of mobile phones and mobile phones. Siemens Mobile was most recently part of the Siemens division " Communications ". Siemens CEO Heinrich von Pierer stated in January 2005 that the mobile phone division for the time being, not sold should be rehabilitated and agreed with the workers, among others, to work longer hours.

Shortly after Klaus Kleinfeld became the new CEO of Siemens, the sale of the mobile phone division of the Taiwanese company BenQ was announced in June 2005. Siemens mobile was in BenQ Mobile, a subsidiary of BenQ headquartered in Munich converted. In particular, workers' side of the sudden and complete withdrawal from Siemens of the fast-growing mobile business was criticized. Even Der Spiegel called the sale a " serious setback for the German economy." The shedding of the Siemens mobile phone division cost again about 350 million euros.

The last phone, which appeared under the brand Siemens was the Siemens SXG75. All future capital developments were sold under the name of BenQ Siemens. BenQ had secured before the naming rights to Siemens for five years. However, under the direction of BenQ 's market share broke again by 40 %. BenQ introduced the former mobile phone division only about a year.

After the parent company BenQ stopped the payments, BenQ Mobile had to file for bankruptcy on 29 September 2006. The production and the operation was shut down on 31 December 2006. On February 24, 2007, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that the last potential investor is bailed out and the company will now shattered.

Thousands of jobs were lost then, especially in Munich and in the former factory in Kamp- Lintfort (North Rhine -Westphalia).

Because Siemens had his staff not sufficiently informed about the changes associated with the sale, the company was convicted nearly four years later by the Federal Labour Court.
