Sierra de las Quijadas National Park

Sierra de las Quijada is a national park in Argentina. It lies to the northwest of San Luis province, which borders the west Mendoza, San Juan and La Rioja in the north and in the east of Córdoba and La Pampa in the south. It is easy to reach from the same town of San Luis on organized tours. The little visited by foreign tourists area of ​​the park covers an area of ​​150,000 hectares.

The park is very famous among paleontologists for its fossils and dinosaur tracks from the Aptian of about 120 million years ago. He is also very popular with Argentine tourists because of its bizarre rock formations, which are very similar to the Bryce Canyon National Park. The University of San Luis and the American Museum of Natural History are working together here in excavations.

The trekking opportunities are excellent, but the complex system of canyons requires a strong sense of direction. It is advised to become a leader, as the extremely strong summer rain can cause flash floods, which the canyons are very dangerous. In addition, during the summer rise (December to February), temperatures up to 50 ° C. At the entrance is a small campground and a small shop.
