Sigmund Fraenkel

Sigmund Fraenkel ( May 22nd 1868 in Krakow, † June 7, 1939 in Geneva) was an Austrian chemist and pharmacologist.

Life

Sigmund Fraenkel, son of Oskar Frankel and his wife Regina, nee Horowitz, attended high school in Graz and studied at the universities of Vienna, Freiburg, Prague, Cambridge and Strasbourg medicine. In 1892 he received his doctorate at the University of Vienna. He conducted research in the field of physiological chemistry in 1904 and head of the Laboratory of Spiegler Foundation. In 1916 he was an associate professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Vienna. Fraenkel undertook research trips to Asia, Africa and North America and mainly dealt with questions of physiological chemistry.

He was from 1919 to 1927 a Social Democratic member of the Vienna City Council and was involved in the construction of hydroelectric power plants Opponitz and gaming.
