The Sigyn (Turku, 2007)

32 m

The barque Sigyn is the last three-masted wooden sailing ship that was built as a merchant ship and is still supporting. It was named after the giantess Sigyn from Norse mythology. Her name means bringer of victory.

It was in 1887 in Gothenburg, Sweden, built to transport lumber. Until the First World War, and sailed under the flag of Sweden. In December 1913, the ship, however, was so badly damaged in a storm, that it was no longer seaworthy. Then it was repaired and converted into a Barquentine to reduce cost in operation.

1927 Sigyn was first sold to the island community Vårdö and later at the Åbo Akademi to be converted into a museum ship. In the 1970s, it was again a radical overhaul because the hull had been damaged. In 1979 she got her original rigging as Bark again. After between 1998 and 2001 further repairs were made, she came to its present location on the banks of Aurajoki in the port of Turku.
