Siikajoki

Siikajoki [ si ː kajɔki ] is a municipality in Western Finland. It is located about 50 km southwest of the city of Oulu at the mouth of the river Siikajoki in the Gulf of Bothnia.

The community was founded in 1868 on 1 January 2007 merged with the neighboring community Siikajoki Ruukki. ; the new community continues to bear the name Siikajoki. The community Ruukki his part was originated in 1973 by the merger of the municipalities Paavola and Revonlahti (Swedish Revolax ). Administrative center of the municipality is the place Siikajoki Ruukki. In addition, the parish includes the Kirchdörfer Siikajoki, Paavola and Revonlahti well as the places Heinolahti, Jauhoniemi, Karinkanta, Keskikylä, Kivijärvi, Kuivaniemi, Lappi, Luohua, Merikylä, Pudasjärvi, Relletti, Tauvonkylä, Tuomioja and Ylipää.

Siikajoki was April 18, 1808 scene of a battle in the Russo- Swedish war; Swedish troops under Carl Johan Adlercreutz Georg Carl von chub and won on their retreat to the north a victory against Russian troops, who had sealed their path to the north. The battles are described in Runeberg's epic poem Ensign Steel ( 1848-1860 ). Nine days later, on 27 April 1808 Revolahti was the scene of another battle. The Swedish troops won a victory here over the outnumbered Russians and so brought about a turn of the war between temporal happiness for Sweden. The battle is usually described by the Swedish name of the village as Battle of Revolax. At reminds a monument raised in 1935.
