Sikorsky S-40

The Sikorsky S-40 was a four-engine flying boat of the 1930s, which was built by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation for the U.S. airline Pan Am.

The first flight of the S-40 in the service of Pan Am was held on November 19, 1931 instead of under the command of Charles Lindbergh and led Miami to Barranquilla (Colombia ). Earlier, the wife of former U.S. President Herbert C. Hoover had named the plane in the name of American Clipper. Thus, the S-40 began the tradition of naming of Pan Am aircraft that carried Clipper name until the end of the company. The other two S-40 received the name Caribbean Clipper and Southern Clipper.

The S-40 was used on scheduled flights to Mexico, Cuba and the Bahamas, until it was replaced by its successor, the Sikorsky S -42.
