History

1964 wrote the U.S. Army from the development of a combat helicopter (Advanced Aerial Fire Support System). Subsequently, Bell developed the Model 209 ( later military designation: Bell AH -1), Lockheed AH -56 Cheyenne and Sikorsky S- 66th The S -66 had the property of being able to swing the tail rotor in the fast level flight back to take over the function of a pusher propeller. However, the competitor Lockheed was the winner of this tender.

Nevertheless, the leaders drove the development of a combat helicopter at Sikorsky. Based on the S -66 and with components of the Sikorsky S-61 is designed to S -67 Blackhawk. He had the typical features of a combat helicopter, but the stub wings were not pure armor-bearer, but should ease in the fast level flight as a "real " wing of the main rotor. The tail rotor was, however, designed again stared in contrast to that of its predecessor S -66.

On August 20, 1970, the prototype made its maiden flight, after extensive test series was followed up in the mid-1970s. On December 14, 1970, the S -67 set a world speed record ( 348.971 km / h ), five days later, the next ( 355.485 km / h ). Despite these benefits and the basic utility of the Blackhawk could not compete with other combat helicopters. As crashed on September 1, 1974, the prototype at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough due to a pilot error on the ground, the program was discontinued.
