Silas H. Jennison

Silas Hemenway Jennison ( born May 17, 1791 in Shoreham, Vermont, † September 30, 1849 ) was an American politician and 1835-1841 Governor of the State of Vermont.

Early years and political rise

Silas Jennison had to work on the family farm in his youth, after the early death of his father. Therefore, only a few weeks he remained a year, during which he was able to attend school. He has the most knowledgeable then appropriated themselves and with the help of private tutors. Besides his work on the farm, he began a political and legal career.

Jennison was the city council of his hometown and was from 1826 to 1831 deputy in the House of Representatives from Vermont. He also was a member of the Governing Council ( Executive Council) of Vermont. In the meantime, he was a judge in Addison County. In 1835 he was elected as a candidate of the Whig Party vice- governor of his state.

Governor of Vermont

After there was no majority in the gubernatorial election of 1835 and the Legislature could not agree on a new governor after about 60 rounds, it was decided that the new Lieutenant Governor Jennison should take over this office for a period of one year. In the subsequent elections Jennison joined then stand for election and was confirmed to 1840 in that office. In 1841, he did not run. Thus he was between the November 2, 1835 and the October 15, 1841 Governor of his state. His reign was uneventful.

After the end of his governorship Jennison was at a probate court judge until 1847. From 1844 to 1848 he was president of the Agricultural Association in Addison County. Silas Jennison died after a long illness in September 1849. Together with his wife Merillai Bush Jennison he had two children.
