The Silesian University Opava, Czech Slezská univerzita v Opavě, is a Czech university, founded in 1991.

Genesis

Prehistory

Opava was already in the Middle Ages to the cities where the school system was highly developed. In the second half of the 14th century here, schools are specifically mentioned. Later, on the occasion of Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Jesuit boarding school in Opava, had wrought in the 17th century in an important position of the historian Bohuslav Balbin, was founded. The Latin Jesuit boarding school became the basis of the German school in Opava.

From the Normal School, founded in 1775 later showed a teacher training college. With the cultural tradition in the former capital of Austrian Silesia is also the emergence of the Town Theater, and the Silesian Provincial Museum, which is the oldest museum in the Czech Republic today, connected. In 1883 the Czech Cultural Association Matice opavská a Czech secondary school in Opava, which as the only one of its kind students from across the country and the adjacent part of Moravia taught a few years in the whole of Austrian Silesia.

In addition to the kk- College of Education, the reorganization learned in 1867, was created in 1870 with the German teacher training institution another training center for educators. 1920, the teachers training college was connected to the German teacher training institution.

After the end of World War II Ostrava became the seat of higher education. At that time in Opava hope that the industrial center of Ostrava would only seat of the technical equipment, while Opava should be three humanities faculties ( philosophical, pedagogical and legal ) of the University as a traditional cultural center of the Czech Silesia. Two other schools, medical and scientific, should find their seat in Ostrava.

In 1953, the Higher Teacher Training Institute in Opava their work again. This school has prepared in the years up to 1959, the qualification of teachers for the teaching of the 6th to 8th grade of elementary school. The institution was later moved to Ostrava, resulting in gradually the Faculty of Education was created.

In the 1960s, no sufficient conditions for the existence of a science faculty were created in Ostrava, so these subjects were taught in Opava. These served here the building of closed higher pedagogical school.

During the political liberalization in the years 1968 to 1969 and was negotiating the establishment of a university in Opava. After the first steps congenial these efforts failed but with the entry of political "normalization" under, Gustav Husak.

The Silesian University could only arise in the process of social change after 17 November 1989. During the preparations for the establishment, to which also other towns in Silesia and Northern Moravia have connected, showed the initiators of the idea of ​​the new University in Opava and Karviná in the great endurance.

Establishment of the University

The Academic Senate of Masaryk University in Brno approved on 17 September 1990 the establishment of the Philosophical Faculty of Science in Opava and the Faculty of Business Administration in Karviná.

Classes at both schools was taken on October 8, 1990. The Act 314/1991 Coll, the faculties were divided from the Masaryk University and built the Silesian University. The Act entered into force on 28 September 1991.

Further development

From the Faculty of philosophical- scientific, the Institute of Mathematics with the seat in Opava has outsourced the beginning of 1999. In 2008, more areas were hived off from the faculty philosophical- scientific and created the Department of Public policies.
