International Silken Wind Hound Society ( ISWS )

The Silken Wind Hound is not recognized by the FCI breed of dog from the U.S., which is counted to the greyhounds. This is a relatively new breed, which emerged from crosses between Borzoi and Whippets Longhaired. The first litter was born in 1987. In Europe, the breed was recognized by the Slovenian Kennel Club in 2003, where the group 10, assigned to Section 1. The breed can be demonstrated in Slovenia in national and international exhibitions and acquire the national champion title, the award of the CACIB, however, is not permitted. The Silken Wind Hound is also recognized by the American Sighthound Field Association ( ASFA ) since 2009.

History

The Silken Wind Hound goes back to a cross between Longhaired Whippets and Borzoi, which were originally designated by the Erstzüchterin as Silken Wind Sprite. However, Wind Sprite was also the breed name of the Longhaired Whippet Erstzüchter of, so that the use of this name was legally prohibited as part of the breed name of the new race. In 1998 it was renamed the Silken Wind Hound. In the German -speaking world the name Silken Wind Sprite is now used by some breeders for the Longhaired Whippet.

Description

The Silken Wind Hound is a small to medium-sized sighthound with a moderately long coat that resembles a small Borzoi. The shoulder height is 46 to 60 cm. Shoulder height and body length form approximately a square. All colors and markings are permitted.

Sanitary

Due to the introgression of Shelties, which took place at the Longhaired Whippet, the MDR1 also occur at the Silken Wind Hound. The allele frequency in a sample of 84 dogs was 17.9 %. Among the tested dogs 33.3 % for the defective allele were heterozygous, 1.2% had two defective alleles.

Reception

The Silken Wind Hound is examined as an example of a newly formed breed of dog from the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis as part of the Silken Wind Hound Genome Project.
