The Silver City Highway is a highway in the west of the Australian state of New South Wales. It runs in a north -south direction along the border of New South Wales and South Australia and connects the Stuart Highway at Buronga on the Murray River with the Warri Warri Gate Road Noccundra at Warri Warri Gate on the Queensland border.

Course

The Silver City Highway begins in the small town of Buronga, a northern suburb of Mildura. There it branches off the Sturt Highway (N20 ) as the northern continuation of the coming of the South Calder Highway ( A79 ) to west - northwest. After 23 km, the city Wentworth is reached at the mouth of the Darling River in the Murray River. There the road turns north and follows the Great Darling anabranch. East of the road are a number of larger salt lakes in this area. After 265 km the mining city of Broken Hill is reached. There crosses the Silver City Highway to the Barrier Highway ( R32).

The trail continues north through the uninhabited outback. After 176 km the road the small town Tiboobarra reached the rest house Packsaddle and after another 160 km on the southeast edge of the Sturt National Park. There branches a 139 km long slope to the north- west to Cameron Corner, the northwestern corner of the State of New South Wales, from. The Silver City Highway runs through the National Park further north and ends after a further 53 km on the Warri Warri Gate on the Queensland border. There is a passage in the dingo fence, which runs through the Australian outback. From there a dirt road that Noccundra Warri Warri Gate Road continues north.

Road conditions and gas stations

North of Broken Hill the Silver City Highway is partially unpaved, with the expansion progresses over time. On the 265 km long stretch of Wentworth to Broken Hill, there are only a roadhouse, Coombah where fuel and food are sold. Between Broken Hill and Tibooburra can be refueled at the rest house Packsaddle.

Numbering

The Silver City Highway was numbered as Route 79. As part of the renaming of the Australian highways is proposed to replace this old numbering by the designation B79. In the southern section between Buronga and Broken Hill changing the numbering has already taken place.
