SIMBAD

SIMBAD (Set of Identifications, Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data; German: File markings, dimensions and bibliography for astronomical sizes) is a database of astronomical information about objects within the Milky Way.

It is maintained by the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS ), France. SIMBAD was created by adding up led the catalog of stellar identifications (CSI ) and the bibliographic star index, as they existed in the data center of the Meudon Observatory until 1979, and then extended by additional source data from other directories and the academic literature.

The first online interactive version was made ​​available in 1981. On 25 July 2005 SIMBAD contained information on 3,514,578 9,364,658 objects under different names, with 158 719 bibliographic reference and bibliographic citations 4794567.

SIMBAD Objects focuses on our Milky Way, a corresponding extragalactic data collection is the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED ).

In recognition of the asteroid 4692 SIMBAD (1983 VM7 ) was named after the project.
