Síminn

Síminn, sometimes referred to as Landssíminn is a formerly nationalized Icelandic telecommunications company. It operates among others, a mobile telephone network, and a television station ( Skjár 1).

The company was originally founded in 1906. On 28 July 2005, it was purchased by Skipti for ISK 66.7 billion ( approximately EUR 720 million ). (: The Icelandic TV companies German ) merged under the name Síminn In December 2005, finally, the three companies Skipti, and Síminn Íslenska were sjónvarpsfélagið.

History

1906 found the following for Iceland's phone system instead of important events: The East-West telephone line Seydisfjörður - Reykjavík went into operation, which in 2002 was awarded the most outstanding Icelandic engineering feat of the decade from 1901 to 1910, Iceland was with foreign countries connected by telephone by a submarine cable Shetland -Faroe Islands - Seydisfjörður, and Landssími Íslands was founded by the Icelandic government. The population was stirring resistance against this new technology, but the Prime Minister Hannes Hafstein could prevail with his request.

1935, the company was merged with the Icelandic Post and so gave posture above Sími. This compound was separated again in 1998 in the postal company Íslandspóstur and the telecommunications provider Landssími Íslands. The name was eventually changed due to higher customer friendliness on Síminn.

Síminn has taken in autumn 2007 its UMTS network in operation and was the first UMTS network operators in Iceland. The network was initially limited only to the greater Reykjavik area and was expanded over time in the other densely populated rural areas.

Competition

Síminn was always the largest player in the Icelandic telephone and Internet market. Until a few years ago the company had ever a monopoly. In recent years, the company got more and more competition in the phone market, such as TAL or Íslandssími. It was also possible alternative Internet providers such as Íslandssími, Halló! Margmiðlun or penetrate the market. Finally, in 2003 merged VALLEY, Íslandssími and Halló! under the name ogVodafone of the 2006 Vodafone Iceland.

Since the opening of the market for alternative providers, prices have fallen significantly, especially for mobile phone and Internet services.
