Simmias of Thebes

Simmias of Thebes (late 5th century BC / early 4th century BC ) was a pupil and friend of Socrates and friend of Cebes.

In Plato's dialogue Phaedo, which depicts the last hours of Socrates before his death, Simmias plays the most important role alongside Socrates. The indication that Simmias was a student of Pythagorean philosophers Philolaus of Croton, before he joined Socrates, Plato gives the opportunity to incorporate the Pythagorean doctrine of the immortality of the soul and the souls in the dialog.

In the dialogue Crito, Simmias is mentioned as the one who provides money Socrates to escape.

Xenophon confirmed in his memories of Socrates, Simmias that belonged to the circle of friends of Socrates.

Subsequent mentions of Simmias can be found in Plutarch's De Genio Socratis and Diogenes Laertius in. This is one of 23 dialogues that Simmias is said to have written, but this is doubtful. Anyway, nothing is received it.
