Simon Dach

Simon Dach (* July 29, 1605 in Memel, † April 15, 1659 in Königsberg ) was a German poet of the Baroque period.

Life

Simon Dach was the son of a court interpreter for Lithuanian. He first visited the Big city school in Memel, the Cathedral School in Königsberg and then switched to the Latin School in Wittenberg. During his stay at the high school in Magdeburg, the plague broke out, and he fled over Danzig back to Königsberg. At 21 years, roof matriculated in 1626 at the University of Königsberg in the subjects philosophy and theology. After his studies, he was first a teacher in 1633 at the cathedral school, three years later vice-principal.

His friend Adrian Brauer told him the world of literature and Elector George William of Brandenburg appointed roof in 1639 as professor of poetry at the University of Königsberg. 1640 roof was awarded his doctorate in Königsberg, 1656 he became rector of the university. In this post he was very successful. The Great Elector two years later owned by the Klingsporn 's family estate Kaukeim gave him the proposal of John of Klingsporn thanks for badger verses on his wedding at Königsberg, which was, however, still managed by Kling spur.

During the Thirty Years' War was Simon Dach leading head of the pumpkin hut ( also zealous company of mortality ), named after the meeting place of the small group, the garden house of the cathedral organist Heinrich Albert, which was twines of pumpkins. With the master of the house and roof, among others Johann Franck, Christoph Kaldenbach, Robert Roberthin, Valentin Thilo the Younger and Georg Weissel met to make music or to read their own poems.

Badger phenomenal, almost industrial production of poetry for all occasions offered him a lucrative extra income. With amazing skill he constantly produced to order Kasualdichtungen that were always printed, often three or four per week. Dünnhaupt has more than 1200 individual prints of these poems 1638-1658, which were eagerly collected by his contemporaries. A book has never been published roof.

From the secular poetry roof only Anke van Tharaw has stood the test of time. The authorship was at times controversial, but is now regarded as certain. This, in addition to Grethke, warumb heffstu mi his only Low German, the song he wrote in 1636 for Anna Neander, the bride of the preacher John Portatius. Johann Gottfried Herder transferred it later in the High German form in which it is known today: Annie of Tharaw. Many of badger poems were set to music by Heinrich Albert and the cantor of the Cathedral School Johann Stobaeus. With 49 years ill Simon Dach 1654 from tuberculosis, after years of illness, he died on April 15, 1659 in Königsberg.

Two of his hymns I am, Lord, in thy power, and O how happy are ye now, ye saints were later set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach. Max Reger also wrote about the latter song its homonymous chorale cantata.
