Simon de Melun

Simon de Melun († July 11, 1302 at Courtrai ) was a Marshal of France from the House Melun. He was a younger son of the Viscount of Melun and Adam II of Constance of Sancerre. From his mother he inherited the castles of La Loupe and Marcheville.

With four other knights in his entourage Simon participated in the crusade to Africa ( 1270) of King Louis IX. in part. Under King Philip III. he served as seneschal of Périgord, Quercy, Limousin and Carcassonne. At the crusade against Aragon in 1282 Simon took over as Grand Master of the Crossbowmen ( maître of Arbalétriers ) part. From King Philip IV he was appointed in 1290 to marshal ( maréchal ). Along with the rest of the military leadership of France fell Simon on July 11, 1302 in the Battle of the Spurs against the Flemings.
