Simone Peterzano

Simone Peterzano, also Peterzani or Petrazzani (* 1540 in Bergamo, † after 1596 in Milan ) was an Italian painter of the late Lombard Mannerism. Today, he is known primarily as a teacher of Caravaggio.

Life

Little is known about the early life and apprenticeship Peterzanos. He himself claimed to have been pupil of Titian in Venice, may at the same time as El Greco. Peterzano signed his pictures later discipulus with Titiani alunnus or Titiani ( pupil of Titian). In the later reception doubts expressed it ( see also " work "). Its activity can be detected in Milan from 1573. The painter has been resident in the parish of San Giorgio al Pozzo Bianco.

In April 1584 took the Peterzano who later became known as Caravaggio Michelangelo Merisi for a four -year apprenticeship in his workshop upon payment of 24 Goldscudi on. It is speculated that Peterzano lived in Rome from 1586 to 1589.

Creation

Peterzano first known works are the frescoes in the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Milan Maggiore ( 1573). The frescoes have influences of Veronese and Tintoretto. For the same year, two oil paintings are representations with Saints Paul and Barnabas for the church of San Barnaba in Milan. Again, observe the influence of Tintoretto, Moretto and the Milanese mannerists.

From the same period a Pietà in the church of San Fedele, as well as an outpouring of the Holy Spirit for San Paolo Converso comes (now in Eufemia ).

From 1578 to 1583 Peterzano painted the frescoes in the choir of Milan Charterhouse ( Certosa di Garegnano ). These frescoes are an expression of its mature form, which should then no longer significantly develop. Here he combined elements of Antonio Campi's naturalism with Mannerist forms, which were influenced in part by Demio. Its probably dating from the years 1583/4 Cross (San Fedele, Milan) is in turn Moretto closer.

His later works are more monumental nature such as the altarpiece for the Cathedral of Milan ( 1592, now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana ).

Despite the apprenticeship with Titian, Peterzanos is essentially trapped in the art academic- rigid Lombard tradition of his time and characterized by severe classicist forms, hard contours and naturalistic details with only occasionally erupting Tizianischer color and atmosphere. Luigi Lanzi already wrote at the end of the 18th century that wanted to graft Peterzanos style Milanese expression, foreshortening and perspective on Titian coloring obvious. Otherwise the doctrine Titian is doubted altogether.
