Sinan Pasha (Ottoman admiral)

Sinan Pasha (Turkish: Kaptan -ı Derya Sinan Pasha, whose full name Sinanüddin Yusuf Pasha, † December 21, 1553 in Constantine Opel ) was the predecessor of Piale Pasha, Grand Admiral ( Kaptan -ı Derya ) of the Ottoman Navy from 1550 to end of 1553, during the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. He was a brother of Grand Vizier Rustem Pasha, who in turn was married to a daughter of Suleiman, Mihrimah Sultan.

Sinan Pasha collaborated repeatedly with the famous corsair and Admiral Turgut Reis in Ottoman attacks on the Italian and North African coasts of the Mediterranean. Because he, unlike Turgutreis, no real Navy expert was, he was with the admirals and captains of the fleet far less popular than Turgut, and repeatedly led to conflicts between the two. After the Ottoman conquest of Tripoli in 1551, for example, the entire Ottoman fleet Sinan Pasha allowed back on land, followed Turgutreis in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and told that they only accept Turgut as commander. She returned only after Turgut Reis, who considered this rightly as mutiny and treason, it commanded. Sultan Süleyman, who was very angry about this incident, however Turguts skills and loyalty very highly ordered Sinan Pasha " to do whatever is recommended Turgutreis ".

About Sinan Pasha's character there are conflicting contemporary statements. The Ottoman historian Ibrâhîm Peçevî wrote that Sinan Pasha was a haughty megalomaniac who did not listen to the opinions and advice of others, and that he had a cold look. On the other hand, a Spanish chronicler wrote that Sinan Pasha was a man with a brave heart and friendly nature.

Sinan Pasha died on December 21, 1553 in his palace in Constantinople Opel and was buried in the garden erected by Mimar Sinan Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Üsküdar.
