Singapore Art Museum

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM; Chinese新加坡 美术馆, Pinyin Xinjiapo Měishùguǎn ) is an art museum in Singapore.

The museum houses one of the largest public collections of modern and contemporary East Asian art. In addition, you will find there an increasing number of works by international contemporary art.

The museum opened on 20 January 1996. It is one of four national museums in Singapore and is located along Bras Basah Road, Singapore. Director Tan Boon Hui is.

The museum since 2007, organizer of the Singapore Biennale.

The building

The museum is in a former Catholic boys' school, St Joseph's Institution ( SJI ) building which was founded by the Salesians. Foundation stone was laid 1855. 1990 gave the Order up the volume, and thus space for a museum was created. After an extensive restoration for museum purposes, the house now offers 18 fully air-conditioned exhibition halls, an auditorium in the former chapel of the school, two restaurants and a museum shop. The former gymnasium is now multi-purpose hall, in the larger events such as exhibition openings, take place.

The architecture of the former chapel has been largely retained even after the restoration. The former school playgrounds and sports facilities of the school were remodeled for the museum visitor as courtyards with walkways, pools and palm trees.

The Collection

The collection focuses on contemporary art of Southeast Asia, which accounts for around 80 % of the stock, the remainder consisting of works of art from other regions of Asia, such as China, India, Korea and Japan.

Publications

In addition to catalogs, document the exhibitions of the museum is the Museum since 2011, the quarterly magazine "The Quarterly " out, will be discussed in the new trends in art of Asia.
