Sir Charles Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, of Trebinshun House

Sir Charles Hamilton ( * May 25, 1767, † 14 September 1849 in Iping ( Sussex ) ) was a British naval officer, member of Parliament and Governor of Heligoland and Newfoundland.

He began his seafaring career at the age of 9 years on the ship of his father, Hector. He attended from 1777 to 1779 the Royal Naval Academy in Portsmouth and commanded a number of ships of the Royal Navy and was at the same time 1790-1812 is one of two members of the House of Commons for the electoral district of St. Germans in Cornwall. He was named after his father's death in 1784 Baronet of Trebinshun.

From 1814 to 1817 he was Lieutenant Governor of Heligoland.

He then served as Resident Governor from 1818 to 1823 the colony of Newfoundland. During his tenure, the reconstruction of the capital, St. John's fell after two fires in 1818 and 1819.

He strove for the development of agriculture, but failed because of the poor soils of the island. The economy suffered a decreased demand for cod and Hamilton encouraged the broadening of the fishing industry to whales, seals and salmon on.

His wife, Lady Henrietta Hamilton, painted a famous portrait of Demasduwit (Mary March ), a 1818 captured Beothuk.

Hamilton died at the family seat in Iping, West Sussex.
