The Sisimiut Airport ( IATA: JHS; ICAO: BGSS ) is 4.5 km north-west of Spring Hill in the west-central Greenland. The airport has one runway designated 14/32 diee, 799x30 m measures and was created on the north bank of Kangerluarsunnguaq Bay.

Scheduled flights are conducted exclusively by the Air Greenland, which uses the airport as an intermediate landing site and no planes stationed there.

Airlines and destinations

History

Before the airport was opened in the 1990s, the settlement was served by the now closed nearby heliport, which was in Spring Hill Valley.

Roads in Sisimiut are generally paved, as well as the connection to the airport. However, there is no road that connects Sisimiut with other settlements. There were plans to connect the community through a 170 km long link road to Kangerlussuaq. It would have been the first street in Greenland that connects two towns.

With 5,460 inhabitants Sisimiut is the second largest town in Greenland and one of the few that experience population growth, which also leads to an increase in the number of aircraft movements. The most important air link goes to Kangerlussuaq, followed by flights to the capital Nuuk and Ilulissat.

Future

In the future, we would like to expand along with the proposed substitution of the Air Greenland fleet, the runway.

Infrastructure

At the airport there is no infrastructure for de-icing of aircraft, which leads to problems in the Greenlandic winter.

All passengers between land at the airport and fly on the same aircraft must get off after landing and again to go through the boarding process before being allowed to board the plane again.

At the airport there is a mail box of the Greenland Post, a soft-drink vending machines and a TV and a small museum and a kiosk.
