Sivuca

Sivuca ( born May 26, 1930 in the Brazilian state of Paraíba Itabaiana; † 14 December 2006, João Pessoa ), actually Severino Dias de Oliveira was one of the most famous accordion players of Brazil.

Biography

He began at the age of 9 years, playing the accordion and soon had small appearances. With 15 years Sivuca moved to Recife, capital of Pernambuco, where he took his stage name and his musical career began in radio. At 18, he became a student of Guerra Peixe, with whom he studied arranging and composition. In 1950, he took with his partner Humberto Teixeira on his first album and wrote his first successful composition Adeus Maria Fulo. 1955 moved Sivuca to Rio de Janeiro, to work in radio and television. In the following years she traveled to France and Portugal.

In 1964 Sivuca to New York, where he remained for 12 years. There he worked with Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moreira, Miriam Makeba and Glorinha Gadelha, who became his wife, together. Together with her, the composition Feira de Mangaio, which is considered a classic of the forró was born.

In the 1970s, the popularity of Sivuca continued to rise. He recorded a number of records and did until his death many concert tours in different countries. He died of cancer.
