Sizergh Castle and Garden

Sizergh Castle & Garden is a castle and a manor house and large garden in Sizergh, Cumbria in Northern England. It is located about four miles south of Kendal and is one of the worth protecting the National Trust.

Through a donation from King Henry II in the 1170s, the family Gervase Deincourt came into the possession of the country. Through the marriage of Elizabeth Deincourt with Sir William de Stirkeland in 1239, all the property passed into the hands of the Strickland family who owned it until its foundation in 1950 to the National Trust. The family lives in the area still.

The heart of the medieval castle is a native of the 14th century Pele Tower (a kind of keep), surrounded by the Tudor House. The tower is about 20 meters high and its walls are 3 feet thick. Around 1450 was added to the Great Hall and two other wings that made life more comfortable. In Elizabethan times, the building was equipped with oak furniture and oaken wall and ceiling panels, which were partly decorated with elaborate inlay work. Some of the furnishings are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. At the end of the 20th century, the museum began little by little to restore the wainscoting. Already in 1770 the Great Hall was extended in 's Georgian style.

How many other medieval castles, one also says Sizergh Castle by a ghost. It is said that the castle Lady starved after her husband she imprisoned in a room and left the castle for a long time. They say you can hear them scream occasionally.

The whole site covers 6.4 square kilometers (1600 acres ), is located innermost in the garden together with two lakes and an award -winning recently rockery. This property dates from 1336, when a permit Edward III. Sir Walter Strickland allowed the country to surround Sizergh around as its exclusive Park. The 1926 added Come rock garden is the largest limestone rock garden, which belongs to the National Trust. The garden is part of the National Collection of hardy ferns ( ferns ).

In the castle, some great paintings can be seen, among other things, a portrait of Queen Mary and her daughter Princess Maria Louisa of Alexis Simon Belle.

From April to October parts of the buildings and the gardens are released for payment to the public.
