History

First SJ ordered a small series of narrow-track vehicles from Märstaverken that were made in 1949 as YCo4p and YCo4t in service. After good experiences also standard gauge cars were built. The series consisted of several diesel and electric vehicles and various types of control and sidecar.

Upon completion of the construction work SJ overtook offers from different manufacturers for the construction, again including Hilding Carlsson. However, the vehicles of the Y6 - generation were built then by ASJ, Hägglund & Söner, Kalmar Verkstad and Märstaverken ( Eksjöverken ). In 1950, the first 40 standard gauge railcars and 35 control and sidecar at Hägglund & Söner were ordered in Örnsköldsvik.

The first railcars were in 1953 with the series designation YCo6 (later Y6) delivered ground - Haparanda for the route. To compile longer trains, the rail cars were equipped with walkways. This allowed up to eight rail cars to be driven in one unit. They got the characteristic color with black frame, orange base, yellow top and gray roof.

The vehicles took over, especially on the branch lines from the late 1950s, almost the entire passenger until they were replaced in the 1980s by the new railcar Y1. There was also an electric version of the railcar, which was combined with the diesel trains, the trains could be used on local routes as well as on long-distance routes. Especially for use on long-haul routes, the vehicles were partially equipped with comfortable seats, they were even used on the complete path of the Inland Railway. After leaving the passengers in the 1990s, however, the history of the vehicles was not over. Many were at Banavdelningen - later Banverket - passed to continue to be used as a web service truck: as auditors vehicles, trains staff, for tool transport and as a camp or station wagon they found further use. In recent years, however, these have been replaced by modern vehicles.

With a total of 373 DMUs, EMUs and 30 321 control and the sidecar Y6 - generation was the largest Swedish serial procurement of rolling stock for passenger transport in Sweden. In addition, Hilding Carlsson delivered a series of narrow gauge rail cars of similar design, the YP.

In addition to the SJ procured private Säröbanan ( Gothenburg Särö Järnväg ( GSJ ) ) in 1954, five railcars and three followers of Y6 - type in blue and beige yellow. The trains were deployed throughout the country, were cheap in operation and delayed the setting of the passenger traffic on many routes.

Between 1957 and 1960, the vehicles were built at ASJ in Linköping and at the Eksjöverken in Eksjö. Together with the seven from Y6 and Y8 converted vehicles 129 pieces were produced. The car Y7 1224 was tentatively painted in the same color, which later received the railcar series X9. From this series several railcars were converted into rail service vehicles.

The interior was redesigned, this concerned mainly the hat racks made of steel tube. The cab has been repainted instead of the previously used green to gray. First, the designation YBo8 was used for vehicles from 1970 then Y8. The trains were then used mainly on long journeys. Among other things, on the Norrlandsbanorna and on Inlandsbanan the rail buses were the most commonly used vehicle. In the early 80 's, the new Italian Y1 displaced increasingly Y8 of the routes in the north of Sweden. These were restationed at Kristianstad and Malmö. On the Blekinge Kustbana they replaced the classic rolling stock in the fast trains 298 and 299
