Sjuøyane

The Sjuøyane ( " Seven Islands " ) are a group of islands north of North Country, in the Svalbard archipelago, with a total area of 65 km ². It is separated from the West Country and its offshore islands by the 13 km wide Nordkappsundet. The most northerly island of the group, Røssøya, is the northernmost point of Norway. The second most northern island of the group is the Vesle Tavleøya ( " small blackboard island "). Main island and the largest island in the Sjuøyane is the Phippsøya.

The Phippsøya is named after Constantine John Phipps, who in 1773 on an expedition to the North Pole Svalbard happened, but later had to decide to turn back. Also on board the later British Admiral Horatio Nelson, namesake was the Nelsonøya. Another island of the group, the Parryøya, is named after William Edward Parry. The other two islands of Sjuøyane hot Martensøya named after Frideric Martens and Waldenøya. Unlike the group's name suggests, there is an eighth island named, namely Tavleøya, immediately northwest of the main island Phippsøya.
