SketchUp

SketchUp is a software to create a three dimensional model on the computer. From this model, images or animations can be created. Because of the rapid mode of operation and the appearance of the results of the name alludes to the classic hand-drawn sketch. You can upload to Google Earth, the models also, but it must be seen only from the Google Earth team.

The software was designed by "@ Last Software " for the field of architecture and released in August 2000. In March 2006, "@ Last Software " was bought by Google, as it is also suitable for efficient creation of model buildings for Google Earth. In April 2012, SketchUp was sold by Google at Trimble Navigation.

Area of application

Applications range from building models for Google Earth over rough design models by architects for architectural representation through to illustration and product design.

The free SketchUp Make- version is available free for non-commercial use by private users, the commercial Pro version includes advanced features such as configurable line styles, terrain modeling, advanced volume tools, high resolution scanning interfaces and additional vector interfaces for a data exchange with CAD systems. SketchUp is also suitable for Stage and Level Design ( flight simulations or 3D games). With appropriate plug-in models can also be converted into various formats supported by game engines.

Description

Special features are:

  • A particularly simple and patented extrusion function,
  • Is oriented to pencil sketches optics and several other optic options,
  • The possibility to insert their own images into the program, which can then be pinned, for example, to the wall of a building
  • The scripting ability using Ruby and
  • Shadow studies
  • Using the OpenGL 3D graphics output
  • ( dae. ) the import and export functions to Google Earth (. kmz ) and Collada

Extensions

SketchUp Pro

SketchUp Pro includes LayOut and Style Builder programs and is available for U $ 590 dollars or 451 euros ( net) plus 1 year upgrade eligibility available. The demo version is fully eight hours and then degenerated to the functionality of the Make- version.

Layout is included in the commercial SketchUp Pro version. With layout, for example, floor plans for buildings on maps in paper formats ( A4 portrait, A3 Landscape, etc.) can be created and printed. The idea is reminiscent of presentation programs such as PowerPoint from Microsoft.

StyleBuilder

With the StyleBuilder custom line styles itself defined and the model can be assigned; there are several pre-defined style definitions. This includes dashed variants in the drawings look like geskribbelt by hand.
