Skimmia japonica is an indigenous plant species in East Asia from the kind of Skimmien ( skimmia ) in the rue family ( Rutaceae ). Above all, a variety of cultivated forms of this kind are popular ornamental plants.

Dissemination

The home of skimmia japonica is located in Japan, Korea and China. The plants grow there as undergrowth in forests.

Description

Skimmia japonica grows as evergreen shrub with stature heights up to 7 meters, with copies rarely reach more than 1.5 meters in temperate latitudes. The leathery leaves are more or less arranged in rosettes at the end of the branches. They are fresh green 7 to 10 inches tall and at the top; the bottom is tinted yellowish.

The plant is dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ), where there are also hermaphroditic species. The white flowers are in terminal panicles and smell sweet (see syn. P. fragrans, of fragrans = scented ). The inflorescences with the flower buds are reddish to brownish and also quite handsome. They are often formed in the autumn, while the flowers open only in the spring. The spherical -seeded berries are striking red and pea-sized.

Culture
