The ruins of Skip Ness Castle

Skip Ness Castle is a ruined castle near the Scottish village Skip Ness near the ferry port of Claonaig on the east side of the Kintyre Peninsula.

The oldest structures of the castle date from the early 13th century and consist of a large stone building with a rectangular base. In it were located on the ground floor a large hall and cellars, as well as some quarters about it. Southeast of it stood a chapel, of which only the southern wall has survived. This was later incorporated into the castle wall.

The building probably dates to the Clan Lord MacSween, the 1261 nearby " St. Columba Chapel " the monks of the Abbey of Paisley zusprach, or at his son Dugald back. A year later, Skip Ness Castle of King Alexander III. Walter Bailloch Stewart, 4th Earl of Menteith, passed. By 1300 the castle was further fortified and expanded into the plant, whose remains are still visible today. The responsible architect is unknown.

Apart from the modern elements that were added to the building in later years, Skip Ness Castle represents a type which is typical for the western Scotland and also as castle of enceinte is called. In this design, the ability of defense lies in a single massive castle wall concentrated - supplemented in this case by towers.

The importance of Skip Ness Castle fell presumably with the construction of the castle in Tarbert which was given in 1325 by King Robert the Bruce in the hands of the MacDonald clan. In the following period, the castle changed hands several times. During the 16th century Skipness Castle underwent a further transformation, as on the earlier structures of the northeast corner, a new tower was built. During the 17th century Skipness Castle was abandoned and deserted. The surrounding buildings were demolished in the 18th century, when the courtyard was converted into a farm. Its buildings were destroyed in 1898.

The ruins of Castle Skipness are under a governmental protection. By construction, the preservation of the historic building and cultural heritage is sought, which is a popular destination for tourists today.
