Skittles (confectionery)

Under the brand name Skittles are sugar coated by the Wrigley Kaudragees in different flavors, mainly fruit flavors, marketed.

History

The presumed original Italian inventor Flavio Skitella moved in 1971 to England, where he founded a confectionery business called " Flavi 's Candy ". From the initial typical "Confetti Candy", which was eaten as confectionery mainly at weddings, he developed the first in " Skitteles " renamed fruit dragees in 1974. After the introduction in North America in 1979, the production was carried out mainly in the U.S. three years later. There, the product quickly gained popularity and was driven increasingly international in the sequence. Nowadays Skittles are just like other products from Wrigley available in nearly 180 countries. In Germany Skittles were at first usually only available at confectionery machines, increasingly finds itself the product but also in the ranges of various retail chains.

In 2009, Wrigley launched a comprehensive web-based advertising campaign in the U.S. for product: Skittles using different media such as Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Twitter. This has been debated by many users of these media.

Variations

In Germany, two different variations are currently available:

  • Crazy Sours ( mixture with the fruit flavors of pineapple, tangerine, cherry, apple, raspberry)
  • Fruits ( mixture with the fruit flavors orange, lime, lemon, strawberry, black currant )

Both variations are in cartons per 45 grams available, Fruits also available in a 55 gram bag (mainly at ATMs).

Others

  • Original Skittles are printed on the white "S" recognizable.
  • Nestlé offered in collaboration with Haribo to a very similar structure in the competing product called Fruity Smarties. This was driven mainly in German-speaking countries as well as in Canada. However, so far is no distribution in the U.S.; This can probably be attributed to the dominance of there widespread Skittles.
  • The shellac made ​​from secretions of the lac insect is used to coat the Kaudragées and gives them the shine.
