Skjern is a city in the Danish Central Jutland with 7756 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) about 7 kilometers east of Ringkøbing fjord in the municipality Ringkøbing -Skjern. The city is named after the river Skjernå, which runs south of the city. It is Ringkøbing the second largest city in the municipality and in 1958 Denmark youngest Købstad. Skjerns neighboring town is four kilometers away Tarm.

Administrative history

Skjern was the capital of the former Skjern municipality. Other places in the former church were Borris, Stauning, Astrup, Rækker Mill, Sædding, Dejbjerg Moor, Hanning, Bølling, Finderup and Faster. The former Neighbours were the Aaskov municipality to the east, Videbæk municipality and Ringkøbing municipality to the north and Egvad commune in towards the south. All since the municipal reform include the beginning of 2007 to the municipality of Ringkøbing -Skjern. In 2006, also was a merger with the neighboring Tarm in conversation.

Sports

In addition to the Skjernå the city even by his handball team Skjern Håndbold is known, which plays in the top handball league in Denmark. Skjern won the championship in the 1998/99 season, immediately after the team had risen. This has yet found any other team. Over the bridge Kong Hans Bro holds every year in the spring Skjerns marathon " Skjernå Running Challenge". According to legend, drowned in the river king Hans Skjernå. He probably ran through the cold water a pneumonia, where he died.
