Skuodas

Skuodas ( German Schoden, outdated: Johannes Berg) is a city and seat of the Rajongemeinde in südkurischen landscape Ceclis ( lit. Keklys ) in the north of Lithuania, in the region of Lower Lithuania, 2 km south of the border with Latvia. 2006 there were 7,508 inhabitants here.

Skuodas situated on the River Bartuva south of the confluence with the Luoba. West of the city runs the railway line Riga - Klaipeda, which was opened in 1914.

History

Skuodas was documented in 1253, mentioned for the first time as Sckoden Scoden. 1259 Battle of Skuodas between Samogitian and the Livonian Order took place here.

1572 Skuodas got city rights.
