Slighting

Razing usually referred to the demolition of castles and fortifications of the losing party to a military conflict. It takes place by removal, leveling, blasting or demolition. In the 19th century, many of the obsolete fortifications were razed in order to gain more space in the face of the growing cities can. This process of elimination of urban fortifications is specifically referred to as softening or Defortifikation.
