Sligo Abbey

The Abbey of Sligo ( Irish Mainistir Shligigh, English Sligo Abbey ) in the northwest of the Republic of Ireland was established in 1253 on behalf of Maurice Fitzgerald, Baron of Offaly and founder of the city of Sligo. In 1414 it was destroyed by a fire, and in 1595 it was devastated during the war of Tyrone (now in Northern Ireland) devastating. Another time it was destroyed during the rebellion of Ulster. The monks left the abbey in the 18th century; Lord Palmerston restored it in the 1850s.

Today it is open to the public. The ruins of the abbey show a wealth of sculptures. There are grave stones from the Gothic and Renaissance periods shown, as well as a well preserved cloister. The highlight is the sculptural edited high altar from the 15th century, the only one who is still preserved from this period in Ireland.
