Slipstream (2007 film)

Slipstream is an experimental feature film from the year 2007. Directed by Anthony Hopkins, who also wrote the script, played the leading role and the film music composer.

Action

Slipstream has no plot in the conventional sense, but operates with Verssatzstücken from various genres that are associative mounted as a narrative way in anymore, so the movie at some points of similarity with works by director David Lynch or even with "Stay" by Marc Forster has. Particularly important is the game with the meta-level. Anthony Hopkins represents the screenwriter Felix Bonhoeffer, according to the script in the Mojave Desert, a gangster film is rotated. From the beginning, the levels of reality intermingle. The protagonist of the film dies on the set, after which Bonhoeffer to rewrite the script. At the same characters appear again and again from his screenplay in his own life, which is increasingly out of control. On the one hand he is under increasing pressure from the producers, on the other hand, it is increasingly suffering from disorientation and lack of concentration. More and more the people are aware of its environment, then, that they themselves are movie characters. And finally, some scenes seem to indicate that Bonhoeffer all just fantasizing. An explanation or resolution but there is not, up to and including the last scene no indication is given, what information is reliable and how one has to weight the individual levels. The result is a film that can not be followed with the usual expectation of wanting to filter out the plot, because they complement the scenes and explain are not mutually exclusive, but each stand on its own.

Style

The dismantling, Slipstream operates in content, is reflected in its shape. The film is fast and hectic cut unusual even by the standards of the modern thriller or action cinema, also so that the settings are not seamlessly mesh, but that significant transitions can occur ( such as when a sports car from one setting to the next, the color changes ). Striking feature is the heterogeneity of aesthetics. Alienating stylistic devices such as coarseness, slow motion, overexposure, still images or high -contrast black and white images alternate in rapid succession, some furious and even increase the risk from Slipstream irritation.
