Sloan (Band)

Sloan is a Canadian rock band from Toronto, originally from Halifax ( Nova Scotia ).

History

The band was founded in 1991 by Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott, who had met while studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. A little later then met Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson to Murphy and Ferguson had previously been playing in a punk band called Kearney Lake Road. The band name was inspired by the nickname ( Slow One) of a mutual friend of the band members.

1992 brought the band with the Peppermint EP their first release on the specially created to label Murderecords out on the later music of other bands on the East Coast scene like Eric's Trip and The Super Friendz came out. In the same year appeared on Geffen Records released their debut album Smeared. As the sound of Sloan did not correspond to the fashionable grunge bands of those years, Geffen operating any promotion for the follow-up album Twice Removed that called the U.S. magazine Spin one of the " Best Albums You Did not Hear " in 1994. Even without support from their record company Twice Removed was a success in Canada, reaching, as previously Smeared, finally gold status. Nevertheless, the band moved first from the public back, beating out a new offer from Geffen and instead decided to bring her next album One Chord to Another back in-house to Murderecords on the market. This principle remained Sloan faithful also in their next releases Navy Blues, Between the Bridges and Pretty Together. Towards the end of the decade the band Recorded Live at a Sloan Party (1997 ) and 4 Nights at the Palais Royale (1999) had also recorded two live albums.

2003 tried the band with the album Action Pact, which was released on RCA Records, to create on the U.S. music market breakthrough. It was therefore decided in Los Angeles working with Tom Rothrock, who had established himself as a producer of artists like Beck and Elliott Smith a name. Despite a catchy sounds, however, failed to raise the public profile of sustainable Sloan in the U.S.. However, in their home country, the band continued to enjoy great popularity. Came in 2005 under the title A Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005 a compilation of their previous musical work out on with " All Used Up" and "Try to Make It " and two new songs were included.

The band finally came forward in 2006 with the double album Never Hear the End of It Back, the musicians gave their highest ever placing in the U.S. album charts. After Parallel Play ( 2008) Sloan trod new ground in 2009 with the EP available only via the Internet Hit & Run and the single " Take It Upon Yourself". Also, the compilation B -Sides Win: Extras, Bonus Tracks & B -Sides 1992-2008 was distributed digitally via their own website. End of February 2011 announced Sloan occasion of the 20th anniversary of the band in May 2011, a new album, which will be played according to the Roman numeral for 20, XX, entitled The Double Cross. The first Canadian single from the album is Patrick Pentland song " Unkind ".

Sloan are considered one of the most successful Canadian bands of the 1990s. Throughout her career, the lineup has so far been nominated four times for the Canadian Music Award Juno Award in the category Best Rock Album ( 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2009 ). In 1997 she won the award for One Chord to Another alternative as Best Album, after they had been two years earlier already awarded for the album Twice removed with a nomination in the same category. 1996 Twice removed, was only two years after its release, named in a reader poll of the Canadian music magazine Chart "Best Canadian album of all time ". In the same survey in 2000, it was ranked 3 behind Blue by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young Harvest to be re-elected for 2005 at No. 1. In all three reading surveys also landed " Underwhelmed " by Sloan's debut album Smeared in determining the " best Canadian songs of all time " each second place
