Slovak National Museum

The Slovak National Museum ( Slovenské národné múzeum ) is the most important museological institution in Slovakia. The headquarters is located in Bratislava, but the group includes 18 museums, of which most are located outside the capital.

History

The origin of the Slovak National Museum is located in the Museum of Matica Slovenská and the museum of the national house in Martin, who founded the Slovak Museology. The first permanent exhibition was opened in Martin 1908, they combined archeology, ethnography, history, numismatics, art and natural science collections. Founded in 1924 in Bratislava, the Slovak Heritage Museum. In the same year, the Czechoslovak Museum of Agriculture in Prague opened a branch office in Bratislava. 1940 both museums were combined to Slovak Museum. With the union of the Slovak Museum and the Slovak National Museum in Martin in 1961, the Slovak National Museum was based in Bratislava.
