Slunjčica

The Slunjčica opens in Slunj into the Korana ( Rastoke )

The Slunjčica [ sluɲtʃitsa ], by locals often called Slušnica [ slu ː ʃnitsa ], is a karst river in central Croatia in the area of Kordun. Typical of the Slunjčica is its clear, emerald green - shimmering water.

History and characteristics

In Lika, in the massif of mountains of Mala Kapela under the peak Veliki Javorniki the river Jesenica, which disappears after only 6 kilometers at the village Lička Jasenica underground springs. The river runs, like many other karst rivers in Croatia, then about 20 km underground karstic ( limestone ). 6.5 km south of Slunj he enters again as Slunjčica flow to the surface

In the district Rastoke the Slunjčica flows into the Korana, which flows from the Plitvice Lakes. The name of the city Slunj can be derived from this river. At the mouth of the Slunjčica in the Korana river creates a waterfall of the width of 500 m and a length of 200 m. This impressive limestone layer is formed by the high content of calcium, which accumulates in the face of the underground river course in the water and later deposited in the area of settlement Rastoke. The travertine creates two stages. The lower level ends with 23 waterfalls, which plunge into the Korana 10 to 20 m below. The barrier is lined along the entire length of numerous small waterfalls and whirlpools.

Due to the relatively short course of flow at the surface the Slunjčica has always to a lower temperature than the nearby Korana. The water temperature thereby moves in the context of 6.5 ° C to 7 ° C in winter and a maximum of 16 ° C in summer. In summer, the maximum temperature of the Korana is about 28 ° C. If there is a cooling of the air below the water temperature, the Rastoke are enveloped by a mysterious fog and the surrounding trees are covered with dew. The river is also a drinking water reservoir for the surrounding villages.
